Woven collective artwork celebrating local cultural identity and history

Through a set of workshops at Blue Gates Primary School in Tower Hamlets, year 5 students explored the history of the area, the craft of weaving and the historic and modern craftsmen and artists that made textiles in the East End.

Students experimented with weaving using different recycled materials, exploring colour, pattern and texture. They then depicted their favourite aspects of the local area in woven squares.

Shadwell Park tennis court, Watney Market, KFC, the East London Mosque, a kitchen view of the Shard, the Union Jack in Bangladesh’s colours all featured. These individual creations came together in a modular artwork, entitled Mant East Ends, displayed in the Museum of London Docklands.

Drop-in weaving workshops were also run in the museum for families.
