Designing a campaign uniting young people across the country

Changing Places was created as part of the National Citizen Service’s summer programme for 16–17 year olds. The campaign encouraged young people to share what they love and would love to change about their local area. Participants made videos and swapped these with teams from different parts of the UK. Young people considered and showcased their local area, and discovered what it’s like where other teams live.

The campaign aimed to help young people feel part of something bigger than their local projects, increase understanding of other young people’s perspectives and surface data on young people priorities. Insights were aggregated on a microsite. 1200+ young people piloted Changing Places in 48 towns, and created 113 videos.

“The discussions about their local area were really rich - with young people challenging each other’s points of view.”

Team Leader, Nottingham

“This [explainer] video is great. It’s got some sick music”

Young person, Ware

“I liked making our video because it’s the most independent and creative thing we’ve done so far on NCS, we bonded more as a team too”

Young person, Brampton

“A great way to get young people inspired and thinking about what they can do for their social action phase. It’s so important for them to think more deeply about the area they live, especially in context to where other young people live.”

Team leader, Bicester
