Designing a programme uniting young people across the country

Development of Changing Places, part of the National Citizen Service summer programme for 16–17 year olds.

  • Invited young people to share what they love, and would like to change, about their local area

  • Participants created short films and exchanged them with teams across the UK

  • Young people explored and showcased their own communities, while discovering what life is like elsewhere

The campaign helped participants feel part of something bigger than their local projects, built understanding of other young people’s perspectives, and surfaced insights into young people’s priorities.

  • 1,200+ young people across 48 towns

  • 113 participant-created videos

  • Insights aggregated and shared via a campaign microsite

“The discussions about their local area were really rich - with young people challenging each other’s points of view.”

“This [explainer] video is great. It’s got some sick music”

Young person, Ware

“I liked making our video because it’s the most independent and creative thing we’ve done so far on NCS, we bonded more as a team too”

Young person, Brampton

“A great way to get young people inspired and thinking about what they can do for their social action phase. It’s so important for them to think more deeply about the area they live, especially in context to where other young people live.”

Team leader, Bicester
